Excellent for learning Swedish.Mar 22, 2013

The title translates directly to "Men Who Hate Women" but of course the book is the Swedish original of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." I bought it to improve my reading comprehension of Swedish. It's ideal for that purpose; the story is compelling even after multiple readings, the narration and dialog are modern and at a useful vocabulary level. It's surprisingly easy to follow the text and one finds oneself needing the dictionary less frequently as time goes on.

Reading in the original Swedish gave me more of the atmosphere of the story, and was worthwhile even though it was slow going (I haven't been in Sweden since 1986). At one point I gave in and read the English, to check whether the beginning of the book was really as cryptic as it seemed.....it was. Captivating, fascinating, suspenseful, but gruesome. Not sure I am up for reading the other two.
